Classic Summer Wedding at The Brick House at Shelburne Museum ~ Wells and Jeremy

Bridal portraits at The Brick House at Shelburne Museum

Wells and Jeremy’s wedding at The Brick House at Shelburne Museum was a long-awaited celebration! The two tied the knot in a Boston Public Garden micro wedding in 2020 with their immediate families. This time around, they were eager to share the day with their friends and loved ones.

I photographed Wells’ sister Tara’s wedding at Shelburne Farms and photographing both of Wells and Jeremy’s weddings made everything incredibly special. When deciding where they would host their second celebration, the couple wanted to showcase the natural beauty of Vermont. The Brick House at Shelburne Museum immediately came to mind! “I worked at the Shelburne Museum one summer… which is how I was introduced to the property and its rich history. Experiencing the character of the house… all while enjoying the sweeping views of the lake, made it absolutely perfect,” says Wells.

This wedding was also featured in Stowe/Green Mountain Weddings magazine.

Wedding Day at The Brick House at Shelburne Museum

Wells and Jeremy’s wedding day opened with the most perfect summer weather. The natural beauty of their venue shone, which made the day that much more enjoyable. Wells got ready with her wedding party and kitten! Her getting-ready shots have to be some of the cutest I’ve ever taken!

After their ceremony, both agreed that reading their vows for the second time was just as meaningful—and less nerve-wracking. “I still cried. I’ve read them probably a dozen times now—twice in public—and still couldn’t make it through without tearing up…What was different was having already done this once, I wasn’t quite as nervous. So, I was able to really focus on what Wells was saying during hers,” says Jeremy. Wells concurs: “Re-reading my vows was a much more pleasant and enjoyable experience. The first time I read mine I was so nervous about messing up and/or crying (I still did both) that I became too in my head. Reading them a second time allowed me to fully engage with what I was saying to Jeremy, and appreciate the genuine meaning of Jeremy’s words.”

The couple also agreed that watching their guests interact with their venue was a highlight of the day. “It was lovely seeing how different guests interacted with our venue, whether it was going on the guided tour of the house during cocktail hour, taking a private stroll down the hill to watch the sunset, or sitting under the tent and admiring all of Chris Griffin’s detailed work. I felt like there was something for everybody to enjoy,” says Wells. Meanwhile, Jeremy appreciated “seeing [their] guests enjoy the grounds—especially lingering on the split rail fence with some cocktails at sunset.”

Advice for Pandemic-Era Couples

To other pandemic-era newlyweds, Wells and Jeremy recommend doing what you want (not necessarily what is traditional) and not feeling bad about celebrating your marriage! “Getting back to celebrating in person…was always the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. Now that we’re approaching it, people will be ecstatic to gather and celebrate,” says Jeremy. Wells agrees, with an anecdote from their wedding day as proof. “I distinctly remember a family friend pulling me aside during cocktail hour and expressing how important weddings are… He spoke about how weddings serve as a reminder, saying, ‘Your vows put everything into perspective as to why people fall in love and get married. Those words are important for your partner to hear, but also for the audience—those who listen with excitement for their eventual love story and those who listen with experience and fond memories of their own wedding day.’”

Words like that remind me why I love photography weddings! It was an honor to capture Wells and Jeremy’s love at The Brick House at Shelburne Museum, and I can’t wait to see where the future takes them.
