My New Years Eve included a very special surprise. My partner, Nick, and I stopped by my parent’s home to wish them a Happy New Year, and my dad had cryptically asked me to bring my camera along. Upon arrival, we were notified that two of their closest friends would be getting married in the living room! I grew up around Bill, and I’ve known Vicki for many years, and witnessing their intimate ceremony was truly beautiful. What a way to bring in the New Year.
I asked the two of them to share a few words on their intimate wedding,
“Our wedding plans to elope from our home state of Maine were in place early in December. But where to go? Who should we invite? How will we capture the memories of our special day?
There’s something about Vermont. The magnificent family vacations on Lake Champlain. The memories of working in Burlington. Lifelong friends and stories only they would understand. A winter wedding in Vermont on New Year’s Eve? The perfect plan.
We arrived in Shelburne the day before our ceremony. Diane from Shelburne City Hall graciously opened their doors on a Saturday for a couple of “out of towner’s” to get us our marriage licence. Legal documents…check!
A last-minute phone request for a festive centerpiece was graciously handled by Chapelle florists. Their arrangement was amazing. Flowers…check!
Vicki went out on a shopping expedition to find a suitable dress on the day of the wedding. No pressure there. Wardrobe…check!
An afternoon of Patriot’s playoff football and it was time to get married. Our wedding plans were only known to our friend Dan Cox who was also to serve as our celebrant. Dan and his wife Casey were hosting a New Year’s Eve dinner party that evening. Casey was not aware that a wedding was about to happen under her roof.
Dan asked his daughter Julia to stop by for a “New Year’s Toast” and asked that she bring her camera. She arrived with Nick without knowing how important her role would be. Our longtime friends Tony and Steph were on hand as witnesses.
We pulled into Dan and Casey’s driveway at 5:30. We surprised Casey with our wedding license and she joyously sprang into action. She quickly rallied and prepared a lovely reading. Dan brought us together with beautiful words and guided us through our vows. Julia captured every moment of our ceremony and snapped great shots of our long time friends.
Our impromptu wedding had it all: A lovely ceremony on a Vermont hillside, great friends, an amazing banquet, gorgeous photography and a photo album to treasure. New Year’s will never be the same!” – Bill Crosby & Vicki Foster
Thinking about their intimate wedding brings a smile to my face, and I’m so grateful to have been present.
