Shelburne Farms Backyard Wedding in Vermont ~ Rosy & Will

I photographed Rosy & Will’s wedding on April 29, 2017 in Ashfield, MA, where they had an intimate celebration of their union.  Of the 20 guests attending, the VIP was Rosy’s 104-year-old grandmother Kay, who lived only a few minutes away from the venue. Rosy & Will wanted to to be sure that when they tied the knot, her grandmother would be there. (More on this charming event here)

On August 19, 2017, Rosy & Will read their vows to each other (again) on the shores of Lake Champlain in Shelburne, VT, with a larger selection of family and friends. Their goal for the celebration was “Keeping things simple and accessible to all of our friends and family – eg. having informal hang-out time, providing places for our friends to camp onsite for free, keeping the food informal but awesome, and making sure things were really fun and slightly weird.”

You may have seen this published in Festival Brides and Vermont Weddings.

The invitation to their wedding featured an image of a cork from Robert Hooke’s 1665 book “Micrographia,” notable as the first book to show illustrations seen through a microscope. I’ve always been a bit of a bibliophile, so it was a particularly delicious moment for me to photograph their rings and invitation along with an original copy of this historic volume.

Shortly after I arrived to begin photographing, Rosy took a bath and blew bubbles with her favorite ladies and had a champagne toast. It was whimsical, heartwarming and fantastic. I wish all brides took the time to have a bubble bath on their wedding day!

The bride arrived at the ceremony in style. Will cued her by blowing into a conch shell, and she appeared on the back of a four wheeler.  A spaghetti western tune played over the speakers. Since the couple was already married, there was no need for an officiant to announce, “I now pronounce you man and wife, you may kiss the bride.” Instead, Rosy’s brother held up a big sign reading “Kissy Face!” at the end of the ceremony, which queued a smooch and cheers from the crowd.

Cocktails and celebration followed. “Our visual theme was a little all over the place (intentionally). We wanted to focus on our passion for nature, science, curiosity, and playfulness.” This included table toppers with a variety of dioramas of little creatures, balanced with flowers by In Full Bloom. Family members gave heartfelt speeches, the sunset was marvelous, and festivities continued into the night.

Rosy & Will planned a months-long Vanlife honeymoon through Canada and across the US.  For other couples planning a wedding (or two), Rosy’s advises, “It is okay to be unconventional!”

I couldn’t agree more!
